The Newkirks spent 43 years as lead pastors, culminating in 25 years at Henderson Hills Baptist Church (HHBC) in Edmond, OK. They have recently relocated to Arizona. Dennis has published four books, served as an adjunct professor of Alliance Theological Seminary and Nyack College, and ministered in various locations in the U.S. as well as overseas.
Marcia is a Registered Nurse, working primarily in the ER and ICU. She left nursing to care for their sons during their childhood. She then became the Director of Women’s Ministry at HHBC. Marcia has a passion for supporting pastors’ wives, a ministry that has had far reaching impacts. Married for over 30 years, Dennis and Marcia have three sons and six grandchildren.
Dennis is a pastor to pastors. Since beginning his ministry in 1976, he has focused a large portion of attention on helping pastors avoid pitfalls, survive the challenges and hurts of ministry, serve their families, and flourish as Christians. His role for Double Honor Ministries focuses his labors in several areas:
Double Honor Group Retreats
Dennis and Marcia love to take several ministry couples on retreats to refresh their bodies and souls. They believe in the retreat setting because it is the perfect time to break the stress of ministry and reconnect as married couples.
As wonderful as the retreat setting is, it is only the beginning of a renewed ministry and deepened marriage. What happens when the ministry couple returns home, to the family, and church? The refreshment of the retreat can be quickly lost so follow up is essential. Dennis contacts those who have attended the retreats, visits with them one on one, attends their churches, and keeps the lines of communication open so that pastors have a resource to turn to when they get back on the field.
Pastor to Pastor Support and Encouragement Groups
To maximize the impact of the Double Honor experience, Dennis endeavors to create small groups of pastors who can offer mutual support and encouragement by meeting once each month at a common location, share a meal, deal with personal, family, and ministry questions, and pray for one another. These pastors are also encouraged to share their contact information with each other so that encouragement and accountability can continue through the month. Double Honor Ministries helps to facilitate groups of pastors supporting one another.
